What To Consider When You Compare Merchant Account Fees

Merchant account fees vary considerably, so it will pay you to shop around before you make any firm commitments. The best option for you will depend on the type of business you run, how long it has been established, the credit rating of the business owners of directors, and how the company actually sells its products or services. If you are operating exclusively online, you also have to consider whether to use your own merchant account, or a third party account offered by another processor.

If you have an established business and a good credit rating, you may be tempted to approach your bank for your merchant account facilities. Certainly, there is no harm in finding out what they have to offer. It is still advisable to compare any offer you get with other suppliers, as an account in good standing over many years is by no means the only factor the bank will consider. You may be surprised to learn, for example, that if you are expanding your operation onto the Internet, that can actually get you placed in a high risk category and make your account more expensive.

For most merchants selling online, or with a combination of online and offline methods, it will be better to approach a specialist provider of merchant services. These providers are used to working with online retailers, and they will know how to get you the best deal possible. They will have working relationships with different banks around the world, and will be able to get you a better rate, in most cases, than you would get by using your local bank, even if you could qualify for an account there.

If you are starting off in online business, there is no need to immediately rush in and try to get a merchant account. You can try to get your business established before you take this big step, by using the merchant account facilities of a third party provider. These will all have their own fee schedules, and also their own restrictions on what you can sell. ClickBank, for example, is very popular with sellers of digital downloads because they offer far more than just payment facilities, but ClickBank is strictly for sellers of digital products only.

PayPal is different, in that you can sell virtually anything. You also benefit from being able to use PayPal money immediately, a benefit you certainly don't get with ClickBank. PayPal is an ideal way for you to start an online business if you are starting on a limited budget. You can set up your account in a matter of minutes, and put the payment buttons on your website. PayPal applies its own set of fees, which are high, but they represent the best way of starting online for most new businesses. Once you are established and want to expand, you can compare dedicated merchant account fees.
